Moomins are popular among right-wing and nationalist groups because they represent a nostalgic, pre-modern world of home, nature, stability, and tradition. Their Nordic, clean, “rooted” aesthetic is easy to combine with myths about origins, purity, and heritage. Since the Moomins are apolitical and gentle, they become a blank symbol onto which different groups project their own values.
